We have just received funding for a new PhD project entitled Educating people in deprived communities – What’s the problem represented to be.

The successful applicant will receive a maintenance stipend (based on the minimum stipend defined by UKRI, currently £17,668 for the academic year 2022/23) and home MPhil/PhD tuition fees (£4,596 – subject to amendment) only up to the target submission date.

The project focuses on localities designated as ‘deprived’ by government initiatives such as the ‘opportunity areas’ or ‘levelling up’. It will centre on a school or other educational setting, exploring how the area in which the school is located is understood by local stakeholders (e.g. young people, parents, teachers, teaching assistants, career guidance professionals, youth workers, educational welfare workers, employers and local policy makers).

It will focus on the concept of deprivation and explore what different stakeholders believe the area is deprived of and consider the impact of these competing discourses of deprivation on young people’s identities and aspirations.
