Learn how to unlock your creative potential and navigate change with agility, optimism and resilience.

This season is the perfect time to bring new ideas to life.

However, if you are feeling stuck in your creative work, it can be hard to climb out of a slump. Or perhaps you are facing burnout or struggling to adapt to the onslaught of change in your personal or professional life. How do you cope?

The good news is you can learn how to thrive through change. And you can build on your strengths to develop resilience, mental agility, creativity and innovation, sense-making and meaning-making. These also happen to be the skills that will help make you future-proof in the workplace, especially with the advent of AI.

When you combine creativity with resilience you enhance your capacity to stay positive, agile, and find creative solutions even in the face of adversity. One thing I know for sure is that to be creative is to be resilient and vice versa. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity and when you apply creativity to resilience, you will not only bounce back, you will emerge wiser, stronger and more resourceful. To be creatively resilient is to be comfortable with uncertainty.

Creative Resilience: How to flourish in the face of life’s challenges

Creative resilience intro video

When Kadenze asked me to design a course on creative resilience I delved into the research around creativity, art, neuroscience, resilience and behavioural sciences, then combined the best parts with my personal experiences as an artist, creator, and entrepreneur. I have curated a learning pathway to build creative resilience and provide you with new insights and strategies.

Here’s what neuroscience tells us about having a healthy happy brain

Your brain loves novelty, variety and consistency. What does this mean? Your brain likes routines that keep it, and you healthy, such as getting plenty of sleep, and exercise, and eating real food at consistent times. Your brain does not like routines that cause boredom. Switch up your activities when you are in a rut. Do something fun. Learn something new. Keep learning. Once you’ve mastered one thing, try something different to give your brain a workout. (This includes exercise, not just cognitive pursuits.)  The wide variety of activities I’ve curated for the course will make your brain happy.

The connection between art, creativity and building resilience

Art-making takes us into alpha frequencies, otherwise known as flow states, which quiet the critical analytical mind, induce feelings of calm, reduce stress and enhance our ability to access inspiration and gain new insights. Flow states put us in a positive state of mind, of being open and receptive to new possibilities.

When we enter the flow states of complete absorption in a creative process, we open our awareness to new perceptions and new perspectives. Creative expression has the power to heal emotions and nurture the soul. When you take time out to create, you shift your field of attention into something generative and life-affirming.

Creativity produces positive emotions that can unlock inner resources for dealing with stress and uncertainty. It is possible to learn creative techniques to reframe obstacles into opportunities (a good way to turn pessimism into optimism) as well as techniques for improvising and generating new ideas about any challenge you are facing.
