How To Productively Follow Through On Your Goals

Following

At what point in time should you give up on your dreams? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Charlene Walters, PhD, Business Mentor, Consultant, Corporate Trainer & Author, on Quora:

I would never suggest that anyone ever give up on their dreams. I am all about going after your goals and staying on track. At times, however, it will be necessary to modify and tweak those dreams according to the progress that you are making (or are not making) towards that end.

Here are some key questions to ask yourself:

· What have I done to make this dream become a reality?

· Is it working?

· Do I have the skills and resources that I need to make it happen. If not, how can I acquire them or otherwise improve?

· What is a smaller accomplishment that I can make on the way to my larger goal?

· Have I done the work and put in the effort towards this dream?

· Do I need to spend more time in preparation or planning?

· Do I know anyone who can help me?

· Is this dream still realistic and do I really want it still?

· What actions should I take next?

· What is my timeline for this achievement and the milestones along the way?

After asking yourself these questions, you can determine your next steps towards the attainment of your dreams. Maybe that involves polishing your skills or taking more initiative. Maybe that involves modifying your dream to something that is slightly more attainable. Whatever it is, you always have to understand that you are the sole driver in terms of whether or not you will make that dream a reality.
