4 Ways to Deal With Negativity at Work

On The Job

I once worked with a woman who was so depressing to be around that people literally fast-walked to their offices and slammed the doors to get away from her. We all ate our lunches in our offices behind closed doors, because otherwise we would be subjected to her whining and complaining in the break room. I wish I had been a little smarter about what she was doing to all of us.

The real value of diversity

Penelope Trunk

I always thought leaving New York City would be good for me because when you live there, the push to get the best of everything is very strong. New Yorkers are maximizers, a term coined by psychologist Barry Schwartz for someone who is always thinking they can do better. These people are generally unhappy. There’s a spectrum, for sure. But if maximizing were a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest in NYC everyone is in the 6-10 range.

The Hard Truth About Achieving Your Goals

Eat Your Career

I’m a big believer in setting goals. After all, how can you expect to “get” anywhere without first having a clear idea of where you want to go? Only, the problem with goals is that achieving them isn’t always all its cracked up to be. How so, you ask? Well, here are three common experiences (I know them well) and what you can learn from them. 1. “Wait.

7 Ways to Make a Good Impression on the Phone

On The Job

I have interviewed a lot of great people in my time, and those talks stick out in my mind. But so does the phone conversation with the women was yelling at her kids every few minutes without turning away from the phone ("I TOLD YOU I'M ON THE PHONE! NO, YOU CAN'T HAVE ANOTHER COOKIE! STOP HITTING YOUR BROTHER!). I also remember the time I obviously woke someone up, and he denied it while he slurred and stumbled his way through his answers.

Employer Embraces Older Workers

On The Job

I've heard plenty of horror stories about age discrimination in job interviews, so it was really refreshing to hear something positive about an employer who not only actively seeks out older job candidates, but older workers who say they've found new careers that inspire and rejuvenate them. Here's the latest story I did for Gannett/USAToday.com. Gisela Ashley had been a real-estate agent for about 18 years when she decided to take inheritance money from her father and go back to school.

Where Is the Love?

Eat Your Career

Do you ever find yourself stumbling around your workplace wondering, “Where is the love?”. I’ve been in professional environments where the tension was so thick you could practically taste it. People literally hated one another. They actively worked against their teammates. The gossip and backstabbing and flat-out sabotage was almost comical. Like something out of a movie.

Last fall I took my kids to Hermosa Beach. It was a big moment for me because the whole time I was playing professional volleyball, in my 20s, I dreamed I would have a family and live in Hermosa. Divorce is immature and selfish. Don't do it.

Penelope Trunk

Divorce is always on my mind because I got a divorce four years ago. Not that I wanted to. In fact, when I thought we were going to a couples therapist we were actually going to a divorce mediator. And then, when it was clear that we were going to have to get a divorce, and I had all the money to fund it, my lawyer finally said to me, "If you drag your feet any longer, you're going to have to get a new lawyer because I'm retiring." So we got a divorce.
