A Coaching Model By Sonal Shah, Transformation Coach, AUSTRALIA
For an individual when he/she decides to transform, they always look to change the circumstances or the person around them but never focus on themselves. The individual spends his/her energy in the wrong place. For any transformation to take place and have a lasting impact, it has to be from within.
For the transformation to have a lasting impact, we need to first understand the Power of Belief. The Power of Belief is what we accept as truth and our belief system then impacts our thoughts and then our actions which in turn makes us feel a certain way. Our beliefs can liberate us or enslave us. What beliefs we hold is what we become. We see it, feel it, and enact it within our environment.
For recharging and reprograming our belief I have come up with the AWARE coaching model.
The AWARE Coaching Model
So, let’s break down the AWARE coaching model:
A: Acknowledge the Inner-Critic
W: Wonder with Curiosity.
A: Accept total Responsibility.
R: Reprogramme to be Inner-Coach.
E: Enjoy the Impact.
Let’s dive in deeper to understand the AWARE coaching model:
A: Acknowledge the Inner-Critic:
We all have an inner critic within us. Our Inner-Critic is influenced by internal and external circumstances. It shows up unexpectedly and delivers its verdict whether we like it or not. By acknowledging the Inner-Critic you let it know yes, I hear you, I can see you and I can feel you. The Inner-Critic could say:
- I cannot stay calm under stress.
- I cannot run.
- I cannot control my anger.
- I cannot commit to a task.
W: Wonder with Curiosity:
While we acknowledge what the Inner-Critic has said, we need to pause and ask the question “Is it true?” “Have I done that before?”
When it says I cannot stay calm under stress, we pause and ask “Is it true, that I cannot stay calm under stress?” Most likely the answer is going to be “No” as there would definitely be a valid reason for you to stress or upon reflection to take stock of how in the past have stayed calm under stress and use that insight in navigating the current situation.
Questions to wonder up:
- Is it true?
- Have I done/experienced that before?
- What is in my control?
Accept total Responsibility:
While the thoughts or beliefs that we let our inner critic hold on to, we also need to take full responsibility for those thoughts or beliefs. As while we hold those thoughts or beliefs there is always a payoff for them in life in general by our actions. The payoff could be anything like “Staying in your comfort zone” “Keeping yourself isolated” “Eating for comfort” “Binge watching tv” “Numbing yourself with social media”
Upon reflection on our actions, we can take stock of what thoughts or beliefs we hold that are hindering our growth or development. We need to accept total responsibility for getting ourselves out of the hands of those beliefs or thoughts as no one can do the actual hard work for us.
Reprogramme to be Inner-Coach:
Once we accept total responsibility, we can start to reprogram our thoughts or beliefs to be our inner coach. We can start focusing on one thought or belief at a time to change the narrative to help us grow or develop like “I am working on staying calm under stress” or “I am calm by focusing on what is in my control. or” “I am doing my best to stay calm under stress”
Completely immerse yourself in how you are moving through those thoughts or beliefs. How you are shifting those thoughts to be your Inner-Coach. The impact it creates in your situation or life.
Enjoy the Impact:
By reprogramming your thoughts or beliefs you can see the impact it has on your actions. By building the habit of reflection as to how far have you come in helping yourself to grow and develop, you get to enjoy the impact of your hard work. The thoughts or beliefs of the past have changed for the betterment of you.
Change your thoughts and you change your world –Norman Vincent Peale
By Practicing this Coaching Model on myself I have come a long way and I do see the impact on my life and the situations I have encountered. This model is self-applicable to anyone in any situation or circumstance. By using this model regularly, it becomes a part of your personality to Acknowledge your Inner-Critic, Wonder with Curiosity, Reprogramme to be the Inner-Coach, and Enjoy the Impact (AWARE).
The AWARE model can also support individuals in navigating life transitions:
- By connecting within by being aware of what stories are they saying to themselves, their self-talk, their thoughts, their feelings, and their action or inactions impacting them.
- By challenging their limiting beliefs,
- By building habits of monitoring their thoughts or beliefs and changing them if they do not serve them to move forward.
And thus, feeling empowered, resilient, confident, and brave to face the challenges thrown at them.
