A Coaching Model By Francesca Paola Crabu, Executive Coach, ITALY
The GLOBETROTTER Model
Having visited over 125 countries, worked full time in 17, and currently coordinating 47, where I am having regular missions in most of them, made me think of a “GLOBETROTTER Executive & Business Coaching model”. Multicultural and multi-language ( 7) skills are the characteristics of the GLOBETROTTER model. As a Senior officer at the United Nations, with a background in Clinical Psychology and Public Health, I may be in a privileged position to easily understand, Senior clients, Diplomats, and Journalists, spending a significant amount of time traveling across the world, shifting from one culture/language to another and adapting quickly to the new environment.
Coaching Niche
My coaching practice aims to support Senior & Business leaders to reinforce their inner power that often, due to heavy workload, jetlag, tiredness, and sleep deprivation seems to vanish. This model is particularly a “model on the road`’ exactly like the clients that are always moving around.
The GLOBETROTTER Executive & Business Coaching Model
This model has a self-coaching [1]component that supports clients when, for instance, while traveling alone, they don’t have anybody to rely on. Executive and business clients may have already several coping strategies and resources and this model, facilitates the process of re-discovering their own power, regaining clarity when it seems that “ the head is still on the air”.
GLOBETROTTER model means Growth (in)Loneliness, BEThRiving, Open-minded, Thankful Too, Effective & Resourceful.
Clients are invited to reflect on their daily growth, each travel, and each new experience, if adequately “ digested, can be a great source of learning.
Clients are invited to reflect on typical situations that happen to globetrotters such as arriving in an unknown country, without a network while the pick-up service did not show up. Is in these situations that the GLOBETROTTER model starts helping them.
The constant feeling of loneliness of senior leaders, when traveling, when taking tough decisions, when responding to media, can be finally seen as a great opportunity. Clients should be motivated by their capacity as lonely travelers /executives to quickly connect with other solo travelers and support each other in case of need. In fact, unexpected help from an unknown person or the other way around spreads a sense of flourishing and a positive sense of self-worth.
The globetrotter model highlights the need for having an open mind attitude and being thankful at any time when, sometimes, they experience what they call “ a miracle happened to me ”. A situation that seems going in the worst direction, may suddenly turn out to be a big advantage in terms of opportunity. The globetrotter model suggests the use of Gratitude exercises [2], a key tool for looking at it during the dark moments.
The globetrotter model explores deeply Senior & Business leaders’ existing multiple resources, as, due to the nature of their jobs, they are effective and operational around the clock.
All the above is enriched by the exposure to different cultures with additional resources that clients can use throughout the coaching session as a helping tool or as a new path to discover. This model also takes into consideration cross-cultural communication as an important aspect of dealing with this niche of clients.
GLOBETROTTER model is more a “Word of mouth” business due to its own specificity in terms of target group and area of work. Globetrotters Executive and Business community sooner or later converge in a chat at an unknown airport (for most people) with mindlike, claiming that they are about to quit their nomad life…then… the GLOBETROTTER model starts to support the conversation!
