Think about those “participation certificates” you receive when you attend an event. A 2012 study found rewards that are disconnected from effort don’t impact employees much. Some programs offer certificates, plaques, and other gifts to symbolize their value. Which one would you rather have? I’m sure you’d prefer the latter.
