Does it Help Your Career to Curse at Work?

On The Job

For Lent this year, I've given up potato chips, french fries and swearing. I decided to go for all three since my effort last year (to give up criticizing others) failed on a regular -- almost hourly -- basis. Not three hours after I made my vow of abstaining from salty food and salty language, I dropped a box of spaghetti in the pantry that exploded like a thousand pick-up sticks.

How to Create in the Twilight Zone

Lateral Action

Photo by Jeff Pang. Each morning before dawn, novelist Nicholson Baker would slip out of bed without waking his wife, creep downstairs without stirring his kids, make a pot of coffee, light a fire in his wood-burning stove, flip on his laptop – the only other light besides the flames – and write. In that […]. The post How to Create in the Twilight Zone appeared first on Mark McGuinness | Creative Coach.

Are Young Job Seekers About To Take a Hard Fall?

On The Job

I often say that one of the happiest times of my life was when I was a college senior. Why? Because that's the last time in my life that I truly felt like I had the world by the tail. There wasn't anything I didn't know. Then, of course, I graduated, got a job.and realized I knew nothing. So, when I did this story for Ganett/USA Today, it brought back a lot of memories of my last days in college, and the naive belief that the world was waiting for me with open arms.

Do Workplace Etiquette Rules Need to Change?

On The Job

What's the rudest behavior you've seen at work by someone with a smartphone in their hand? It may take you a minute to think of the No. 1 worst behavior (many people seem to carry a list in their pocket), but before you spout off, I want you to consider something else. What's your rudest workplace behavior? Are you snarking about someone else's behavior when your manners are less than stellar?

What You Need to Know Before You Start Your Own Business

On The Job

Ever thought of running your own business? Some entrepreneurs might tell you to be careful what you wish for, while others may say it's the greatest thing they've ever done. What James Franco Can Teach Us About Productivity

Eat Your Career

Admittedly, this post is a little late. The Oscars were several weeks ago now but, for those of us who love movies, fashion, and snarky commentary from Joan Rivers, this year’s ceremony won’t quickly be forgotten. In case you missed it, the show was widely panned by critics who placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of the two young hosts: Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

3 Steps to Help You Find and Keep Your Motivation

Eat Your Career

A few years ago, I decided I was going to run a marathon. I bought a brand new pair of Nikes, loaded my iPod full of great running songs, and mapped out the perfect route around my house. A month later, my Nikes were still pristine, my iPod was collecting dust and that perfect route was gently mocking me every time I left my house. Needless to say, I had the motivation at some point.

Easing Into Resistance

Eat Your Career

This past weekend, I became very familiar with a little thing called “resistance”. It’s kind of like a temperamental toddler in your head, kicking and screaming and repeating, “I don’t wanna! I don’t wanna! I don’t wanna!” That’s what resistance feels like. It happens when you know you SHOULD do something, you know you WANT to do it, and you know you CAN do it, and yet…you just don’t wanna.

The Importance of Celebrating

Eat Your Career

You may have noticed that it’s been a little quiet around here. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been going through a pretty big transition. At this point, things are starting to slow down and life should (hopefully) return to normal (or some semblance of) before long. So look out for more frequent blog posts in the near future. For now, though, I wanted to share a little bit about what I’ve been doing and what I’ve learned recently.
