Why a Missing Button Could Keep you From Getting Ahead

On The Job

I recently watched a news clip about a local mall where the shop owners stated that not only were they currently hiring for seasonal jobs, but they were hoping some of those candidates would turn out to be permanent hires. Good news right? Then the reporter cut to an interview with a woman walking out of a local employment agency. The woman began talking, constantly playing with her hair and smacking gum.

How Successful People Deal with Asperger's

Penelope Trunk

I get an incredible amount of email from people with Asperger Syndrome. It’s all really similar. Here’s a sample: “I’m 45 and a lawyer and I have Aspergers. I don't know what is appropriate, and not appropriate some of the time, such as talking too much about very personal info, or saying something that offends someone. “I've gone through many friends in life.

Why Blindly Following the Rules Is a Mistake

Eat Your Career

The other night, my parents and I hit a local restaurant for happy hour. We ordered a round of drinks at discounted prices and were hoping to get a final round in before the cutoff time (happy hour ended at 6:30). We called the server over at what we thought was the right time and ordered. She went to grab our drinks but came back and said it was 2 minutes past the cutoff.

Should Women Give Up the C-Suite for More Flexibility?

On The Job

This week for USA Today I wrote about a new survey by More magazine showing that three-out-of-four women say they would not apply for their boss' job, partly because of the pressures that go along with it. The survey also found that 43% of the women surveyed say they are less ambitious now than they were a decade ago. And only a quarter of the 500 women ages 35 to 60 say they're working toward their next promotion.

Could You Start a Fire With Your Multitasking?

On The Job

Anyone who multitasks say they do so because they're good at it. That's right before they find their car keys in the refrigerator and realize they've sent a naughty text to the boss instead of a significant other. Believe me, I understand. If I didn't multitask, how else would I be able to get anything done? Does it really matter that I've almost burned down the house a couple of times while making scrambled eggs.and then deciding to check email while watering a dying plant on my desk?

Make Your Work More Meaningful

Penelope Trunk

This post is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Take a look at Steve Martin's business card. I love it because it brings to light the lack of meaning we often feel during the daily routine of work life. When I was new to the workforce, I saw two ends of a spectrum. On one end, risking one's life to save dying children, and on the other end, hedge-fund banking to make millions.

How to find a job you'll love

My homeschool blog is mentioned in the New York Times. It's a small mention, but it's a big deal for me, because lately I've been obsessed with how people learn, and what makes a successful adult. It's appropriate that the Times would link the day I wrote about what my day is like trying to homeschool and work full-time. It's a colossal mess, really.

Blogging Bootcamp is Stupid

Penelope Trunk

Last week I announced that I’m doing a week-long series on how to blog. Then I received an onslaught of emails reminding me of how I have always said that it’s stupid to try to earn money blogging. Here’s the post where I outline the rationale for this. But the bottom line is that making money from blogging based on getting tons of traffic is a terrible goal because so few people can do it.

Can Business Be as Creative as the Arts?

Giving Thanks for Adversity

Eat Your Career

I’ll be honest: It’s been a rough year. I’m not complaining…it’s been a great year, too. Lots of good, but lots of not-so-good at the same time. Thanksgiving is about celebrating abundance. And let’s not forget that abundance comes in all flavors. When it rains, it pours. The blessings, the struggles…they come in waves, don’t they? It’s hard to find something to be thankful for when adversity is all around you.

Top Techniques for Coaching Your Contact Center Agents

Speaker: Francoise Tourniaire - Founder of FT Works, Omid Razavi - Chief Advocacy Officer at SupportLogic, and Gregory Walker - Senior Product Manager at SupportLogic

The 'great resignation' and the 'great talent reshuffle' have impacted contact center and customer support staff as much, if not more than, any other part of the workforce. Couple that with a potentially volatile economy and it's clear that organizations must invest in innovative approaches if they want employees who are engaged and informed enough to significantly improve the customer experience and eliminate the high costs associated with agent attrition.
