It's really dangerous to think there are vastly different motivators in the non-profit world. You'll notice that in the for-profit world, in the new workplace, money is not a key motivator. I'd like to add one idea from a mentor of mine, who led big organizations in both sectors. Salesforce.com rocks!

We've built a system where commodity farmers simply cannot make a living without government payments; subsidies have been internalized into the business model (e.g., If you talk to farmers, many would tell you that they would LOVE to operate independently in a truly free market and not need government subsidies.

As a Gen-Y who stopped going to college I found that real life experiences, networks and self education were more important and vital than a college education for my career track.

Government welfare checks and the food stamps! Government Department of Agriculture still makes payments, rain or shine. It always has been.

Inspiration and motivation are the factors that differentiate a leader from a boss, in my opinion. Not many corporations I know have such hatred and malice and "desire for his demise or failure" than can be found in government. We are on the verge of a dollar crisis, partly based on the government's non-stop spending.
