I'm starting to see posts that seem to suggest that motivation should be all stick, no carrot. By doing so you can motivate to produce even superb results. A vague compliment tells you nothing; a specific one tells you what to do more of. Similarly, a vague criticism is meaningless, while a specific one tells you what to correct.
I'm in the real estate industry, and surrounding yourself with good people who are creative and open to other ideas, and who are willing to implement and mix and match (#6), has been key to the success that I've had in this market. I especially like point #5. There is far too much snark in our culture on this matter.

By the time you're close, you are so motivated to get there that it doesn't feel like work at all. When we see the big triumph its easy to get all motivated, but small things are which we need to keep on doing inspite of them being the most difficult to do. I think the most important thing is motivation and encouragement.

It is quite difficult to motivate me on a Sunday but you have me thinking hard and reading like crazy. Put up some curtains or something if you want to be creative. I am really going to like it here, I can tell. All the best and keep up the great work. It looks great the way it is.
One flaw I railed at for years was the lack of creative, spontaneous unfettered time. Now I schedule time to find connections, be creative, listen and daydream during each day, even if it is only for 15 minutes. The whole "shiny object syndrome" that you describe seems to be a common character trait of creative people.

They might consider some of their actions "interesting", but the underlying motivation is competition. I'm actually happiest when I'm being challenged (that is, mentally and creatively stimulated–not being put under distress). Competitive people tend to be insecure and unhappy at the core.
