I want to be more diligent about finding a mentor to help me grow, outside of my supervisor. We meet many in our lives that can become our coaches or mentors, for longer or shorter periods of time. Finding a good mentor/coach/teacher is tough, but starting a blog exposes you to a huge measure of immediate coaching.

Companies like Google have very flexible environments and pretty moderate hours, particularly for engineers, but are about 75% male (and 85 – 90% for engineers).
So, FriendFeed was very very small, but Facebook bought them for what the engineering team learned how to do. Every ship needs a captain, a navigator, and an engine room engineer. Long answer: A lot of companies that have investors are built on the idea that the company will build something very valuable to another company.
It’s the best way to have a meaningful conversation and it’s the best way to rope in a mentor or look like a star performer. It takes a lot of practice and patience to get it "right" and you, your mentor, or anybody else for that matter have a finite amount of time to pursue answers. That rings true to me.

For some reason, your voice seems to get through to her much better and smoother than mine on topics like frugality etc. : ) She totally looks up to you as a mentor! Unless it's an MBA from a top 10 school, or leads directly to a PhD in science of engineering, forget about it. For me, and for my girlfriend! What a rip-off.
For years I've been trying to explain to my engineer husband how the numbers literally float around the page when I look at it and I should probably not be the one doing the taxes. On another note- I have the same types of issues with numbers. Great post.
Most of the aerospace and civil engineers I've worked with never had to handle childrearing or other social duties. By the time the light goes on, we're long out of water, our engine's overheating and about to blow, and we only just got the memo! Also, the phrase "not exactly rocket science" was a trigger.
Many are engineers. You can find a guy like this – he may make less, probably won't be an Alpha Man CEO type, but they exist. They will be relentlessly normal, perhaps maddeningly undramatic at times, unusually interested in sci fi/fantasy/history/weird stuff and not glamorous.
I teach a lot of leadership classes and recommend setting office hours for employee meetings to reduce interruptions, looking at email only 3 times for a total of 30 minutes a day to keep the box clear and catch urgent items, and to stick to routines like making a work list to stay on track. my desk is covered in to do lists.

Most people with Asperger’s, even if they are geniuses at, say, engineering (which is very common ) get in trouble mid-career for lack of social skills. Is it worth risking his life in order to have social engineering? Clearly women look for leadership in how to conduct their lives. Don't you have an engine to tune up?

When I was 22 and bartending my way through engineering school I fell in love with a 35 year old stockbroker. I used to work for a major corporation in a big fancy engineering mgmt job in MSP and gave it all up to move to podunk North Dakota just to marry a farmer.
I also have it on good authority that the quality of Facebook's software engineering is shite. Of these, I think it is the inability to back up your own data that causes me the deepest concern. Apparently they have 6 different implementations of copy-paste that all behave slightly differently.
I went to the top engineering school in the country. The "smart kids" at my country bumpkin high school all went away to college and have been able to find successful careers in medicine, engineering, law and business despite having a high-school education that didn't include every AP class available to our city peers.
